The state symbols of the German Democratic Republic

the workers - on a red circular area in golden colour, occupied with a
goldfarbenen, opened circle as symbol of intelligence and surrounds by
a also golden ear ring as embodiment of the peasantry. A
black-red-golden tape umwindet the wreath/ring and expresses the
solidarity of the social Krafte. In the case of its establishment in
the year 1949 the German Democratic Republic took up the progressive
traditions of the past and gave themselves a flag in the colours
black, red and gold in three equivalent, horizontal strips. The
colours go back on the uniforms of the Luetzow free corps in the time
of the antinapoleonischen war of liberation 1813/14, on which flag of
the progressive Burschenschaften and the flags, under which the
revolutionary fighters 1848/49 their life against reaction, for which
used liberty. Thus one interpreted the colours at that time: The
dark night of the reaction, red is black is the blood, which the
fighters for the liberty sacrificed, and gold the sun of the liberty,
whose stairway expects the people. Ferdinand free ligrath wrote over
the symbolism of the colours: the powder is black, red is the blood
and golden flickers the flame. " 1959 were inserted the state coat of
arms into the center of the flag.
